Clean Energy Surpasses Coal for the First Time
A recent article published by Kapital.bg cites data from the international energy think tank Ember, showing that for the first time, clean energy has surpassed coal-generated electricity worldwide.
In the first half of 2025, renewable energy production – particularly solar and wind – reached over 5,000 TWh, while coal-generated electricity fell to around 4,900 TWh.
The growth of renewables fully covers the increase in global electricity demand, marking a turning point for the world energy system. In particular, China and India are leading the transition toward a more sustainable future through rapid expansion of new solar and wind plants.
In Bulgaria, the photovoltaic sector continues to grow steadily: installed capacity has reached nearly 4,500 MW, tripling in just three years. Today, solar energy accounts for about 19% of national electricity production, and projections indicate it could surpass 25% in 2026.
These results confirm that the energy transition is now a reality and that green energy represents a fundamental pillar of the country’s economic and environmental development.
