From September 10 to 13, 2025, the Golden Sands Resort in Varna hosted the 17th Conference of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, BulEF 2025, a key event for the electric power sector in Bulgaria. Topics discussed included: transformations in the electricity sector, energy efficiency, renewable sources, lighting, and studies on electrical phenomena and processes.
Eng. Plamen Dilkov took part in the conference with a significant contribution on the hydropower potential of the Danube River, presenting innovations related to mobile Bulb turbines – a type of double-regulated Kaplan turbine developed under the EU LIFE program. His study analyzed the different operating regimes of the turbines and their impact on sediment transport, fish migration, and environmental sustainability, highlighting how this technology enables the combination of renewable energy production with eco-compatibility.
Eng. Dilkov’s presentation emphasized how mobile Bulb turbines can represent an important step toward more sustainable hydropower, capable of reconciling energy efficiency with the protection of river ecosystems.
